The Film Chain

Homework

Production
There are three main stages of production; Pre-production, Production and post production. However this can be separated.

1. The idea- all films start with an idea, that may come from a book, a person or a simple concept that people develop.
2. Development Finance- turning the idea into a script, but this costs money to do. So the producer has to create a pitch to sell the idea and get the money to go onto the next stage of production.
3.Script Development- they get a writer to produce a script according to what the producer and financiers want. They first have to write a synopsis and they have to agree with the producer on key events in the film.
4.Packaging- with a finished script the director and producer have to decide if they are going to continue to film the movie and who they are going to employ. A common way to make a movie more commercial is to attach/employ popular or well known stars to the script/film.
5.Financing- the film makers must secure enough funding to make the film the best/highest standard possible.
6.Pre-production- with the finance secured, the full cast and crew are hired and preparation for the shoot starts. When all the heads of department are hired the script is circulated and Pre-Production begins.
7.The Shoot- can involve hundreds of people and are constantly struggling to keep everything on schedule and budget.
8.Post Production- usually starts during the shoot, as soon as the first 'rushes'- raw footage- and sound are available.

Distribution
is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.
A film distributor is a company -or an individual- who are responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor can set a release date for the film and the method for which the movie is to be exhibited or available for viewing.

Marketing
In the production of a new film, it has to be advertised to the public so that they now about it and get more information on the new film. This is also to encourage the viewers to see and buy this product.
Advertising a film is called film marketing which is done by the company in charge of distribution.

Exhibition
is the screening of the film. How the audience views the movie.

BFI
BFI- British Film Industry is a charitable organisation that encourages the development of arts of films and TV.

Production
There are 5 stages to production
1.development-ideas from film/books are created
2. Pre-production- preparations are made for the film/book
3.production- onther elements from the film are recorded
4. Postproduction- images, sounds and visual effects are recorded and edited
5. Distrubtion - the finished product is screened or released in stores

Alliance of motion picture telebision are one of the main producer companies. Carol lombardini is the acting president. It was founded in 1960.
Star trek is also another big production company

The ownership of the studios decdies whether or not a film and be produced and distributed.
A production which is independant has an creater which contorls the artistic and creativity.

Distribution
This is the way something is shared out among a group or spread out overseas.Films go through the process of development,pre-prodution,production,post-porduction and distribution.

A film distributor is a company or an indvidual responsiblity to market a film so other people ca  see it and the company can make profit. However its not always the same film distributor company.

The traditional way of producing a film is film festivals which can be very expensive  and doesnt often recieve a lot of financal gain. The newer way of distribution has a lot more people involved and can cost a lot and films has to go through BFI.
A film distributor  decides to release a particular film as it might be a public faviourt rather than another film

Marketing
this is the COMMUNICATION of the value of the product or service to the customer. Its different to distribution as its not the way the film is is shared out

Exhibition

Audiences see films in cinemans online sky demand. Distrubtion has a time period. Whereas exhibition you can view the film any tine.
Box office is a place where tickets are brought/ resevered to see a film all year the total money made is then calculated at the end of the year.
Box office returns are useful as it shows how many people didnt like the  fiom.
Money from a successful film is split between everyone that helped make produce and distribut the film

video production stages - pre-productionPRODUCTION.

Pre-Production

Scripting & Storyboard – The pre-production phase of a project is where all the planning takes place before the camera rolls. Whether its measured in minutes, hours or days, this planning phase sets the overall vision of the project. Pre-production also includes working out the shoot location and casting. You’re in pre-production mode the moment you start writing down a few points to cover in a video even if it is a short piece made for a blog. As your projects become more ambitious you can start to storyboard the project. Storyboards can really smooth out the post-production process when it’s time for editing. This will really be useful if there are multiple people working on the project.

Production

Production begins once the footage is recorded. This process will capture all the scenes and information captured in the pre-production process. During the production process you will work out the lighting requirements, framing and composition. Some projects will also shoot B-Roll during the production process. B-Roll is supplementary footage that is included in the finished product.

Post-Production

The post production process begins after all the footage has been captured.  This is actually one of my favourite parts of the video making process. Graphics can be added along with images, music, colour correction and special effects. If you are producing your own video content there will be a bit of a learning curve at first, but it will be really rewarding.Post-production is like putting the last coat of paint on in a room and it will be well worth the time to learn the basics. This is where your video project will really come to life.

If  you are in charge of project editing and not sure where to start I’d recommend that you check out YouTube’s video editorMovie Makerfor the PC or iMovie for the Mac. All editors share some basic principles. If you need more advanced features you can always look at some of the pro-consumer video editors like PowerDirector available on www.cyberlink.com or a pro editor such as Premier Pro or Final Cut.

Marketing

I'm studying business so I know about the 4 ps of market and they are not so complicated.

These four P's are the parameters that the marketing manager can control, subject to the internal and external constraints of the marketing environment. The goal is to make decisions that center the four P's on the customers in the target market in order to create perceived value and generate a positive response.

Promotion Decisions

In the context of the marketing mix, promotion represents the various aspects of marketing communication, that is, the communication of information about the product with the goal of generating a positive customer response. Marketing communication decisions include:
